Unanimous City Council Vote A Victory for Los Angeles!
MCS Partners with Coalition of LA City Unions to Protect City Services
In a major victory for LA City residents and workers who provide the public services they depend on, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously recently to avoid further service cuts and furloughs. MCS helped to achieve this victory in part through holding a well-attended press availability before the Council meeting and working our extensive media and political relationships, as well as launching urgent advocacy and outreach efforts.
The vote effectively ends CAO Miguel Santana's attempts to impose unilateral service cuts, including ten more furlough days, for a total of 36, as he has advocated. Before the vote, City employees and their union leaders addressed the Council, urging the City to meet the challenge of these times responsibly, in partnership with City workers, to find viable, lasting, and comprehensive fiscal solutions. The Council vote also reinforced a Parking Lot Leasing Plan known as "P3," which asks private companies to bid on contracts to operate nine City parking lots as a way to raise hundreds of millions of dollars.
Over recent days, hundreds of civilian workers and sworn firefighters demanded the City move aggressively to implement P3 as a way to generate much-needed new revenue - and the Council listened. In addition, this victory was achieved thanks to Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the LA County Federation of Labor, who helped to educate Council members on the importance of maintaining City services and avoiding additional job losses and pay cuts.
MCS is helping to lead the battle for America’s working families and the struggling middle class!
As a part of a broad labor–community coalition, we are working with partners across Los Angeles to mobilize the March 26th RALLY FOR WORKING FAMILIES in Los Angeles!
The protests in Wisconsin have awakened millions of people, including in California, who are standing together to fend off the vicious attacks on the rights of working people. In Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Florida, Michigan and now in California, the people are saying NO to brutal funding cuts for schools, police, health care, and much more.
Join MCS to protect OUR communities and OUR jobs!
Wisconsin showed that the people are not going to let political opportunists, corporate CEOs, and right-wing billionaires trample on the American Dream – or union labor – without a fight.
The right to Collective Bargaining, won by generations of public and private employees during the past 150 years, is under unprecedented attack. But we are growing in force, and ready for battle…. We will not let the enemies of America’s remaining middle class prevail!
That’s why tens of thousands of Angelenos are coming out to rally on March 26th, 2011. Our message: “Enough is enough! Deep-pocketed CEOs and the politicians doing their bidding have gone too far this time!”
